Labels for Wine Bottles

Everything you need to know about wine bottle labels.

Labels for wine bottles have varied over the centuries to showcase the origins of the wine in the hopes of attracting new wine enthusiasts. Wine labels must visually impact (possibly with a sense of humor) to create an appeal to the consumers. With so many choices of wines available, those who are “newbies” will solely base their decision on what the label looks like.

Designers may look to create a harmonious continuity with an elegant design that is unrivaled, or they make to look to get a laugh. It really just depends on the maker. Designers use symbols to convey what the wine tastes like.

For example: a fierce animal such as a wolf, shark, tiger may represent a much more bolder wine, while animals like birds, horses and free flowing animals may show the wine is of a subtle variety.

There is no rhyme or reason for some labels for wine bottles – the designers want the most outrageous design to make their brand stand out as well.

Certain wine bottle labels may show a family crest or coat or arms to show “we’ve been in business for a long time, therefore, our wine is great tasting and reliable”.

This is a very old tradition – one of the oldest in the wine label making industry. Pop art – while not new – does appear on labels for wine bottles because many are familiar with pop art designs, thus, they may purchase the bottle because of the interesting pop art concept.

Collecting labels for wine bottles is a hobby all in its own because of the vast selection that exists in the world today. In the past, wine labels were very simple and straightforward. Today, wine labels are works of art in their own right and you can spend many hours searching for a wine label that has eluded a collector.

If you are interested in collecting labels for wine bottles, you should carefully remove them from the bottle and put them in a scrapbook. Saving the entire wine bottle itself can be one option but that can take up much space in your home – especially if you do not have proper storage.

If the wine labels are remarkable and worth saving, framing them as an art piece to hang on your wall will show how sophisticated you really are.

Rookie wine drinkers may choose something that is in the middle of the road if they are completely clueless. What does this mean? Choose a wine with a label that has style and sophistication with a sense of humor – not overly humorous.

Wine makers take great pride in designers their own style – when you see the design or text on labels for wine bottles, you know “that’s an X brand wine” immediately.  Some even offer personalized labels for wine bottles, geared toward more avid enthusiasts.

Designing labels for wine bottles that will get consumers’ attention is just as important as the wine itself, it would seem. Just when you think a wine bottle label doesn’t exist or “that could never be” – it probably does.

Before I leave you, here’s one final fun fact.  Did you know that some labels for wine bottles have braille for those who are blind and can’t read the wine bottle label?
